La Gritona Tequila
La Gritona is a distinctive spirit crafted by master tequilera Melly Barajas and her all-female team at NOM 1533 in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Made from 100% mature Blue Weber agave aged 8–10 years, the piñas are steam-cooked in traditional earthen ovens for 24 hours, rested for another 24, and then crushed. Fermentation occurs naturally in open-air steel vats, followed by double distillation. The tequila is then rested for 6–8 months in reused American whiskey barrels (from Jack Daniel’s and Balcones), imparting subtle aging characteristics without overshadowing the agave's essence.
On the nose, this is fresh and herbaceous with pronounced cooked agave, hints of citrus (lime and grapefruit), and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is light-bodied and crisp, featuring with green citrus and a touch of caramelized fruit.
