Guido Rivella Barbaresco Montestefano 2019
For 47 years, Guido Rivella was one of the quiet forces behind Angelo Gaja, helping shape the wines that put Barbaresco, and Piedmonte itself, on the fine-wine map. When he finally ‘retired’ as winemaker there, Rivella returned home to his family’s vineyards in Barbaresco and began making wine on an almost impossibly small scale.
50+ year old Nebbiolo vines grow in deep, compact white marl soils rich in limestone and clay, producing wines of unusual muscle, structure, and longevity. Rivella gives the fruit the time it demands: 25-28 days of traditional maceration with a submerged cap, followed by 18-22 months in seasoned French oak casks. The wine is bottled without filtration and allowed to rest before release.
