Forthave Mithradates Amaro
A wine-based amaro from Brooklyn’s Forthave Spirits, inspired by the ancient elixir Mithridatum—an herbal concoction attributed to King Mithridates VI of Pontus, believed to confer resilience to poison and famed through Roman and Medieval lore . Crafted with red wine from Finger Lakes hybrid grapes, fermented on indigenous yeasts and infused with 34 botanicals (including mace, cedar, cardamom, fig), it embraces historical complexity while maintaining modern vibrancy.
On the nose, it offers brooding fig, warm cardamom, cedarwood, and noble mace; the palate unfolds with rich dark fruit, baking spice, and savory cedar-earth tones over a dry-vinous structure. The finish is herbaceous and enduring, with lingering bitter-sweet notes—ideal neat, on the rocks with an orange twist, splashed in soda or tonic, or used as a bold red-vermouth substitute in cocktails.
